Amateur Astronomer Discovered Passing Asteroid

Send to Kindle

First, a question: what's the deal with Siberia? Why do they get all the really big meteor events?

Today marked the near-earth passage of an asteroid, 2012 DA14 was discovered last year by a Spanish dentist turned amateur astronomer and has been closely watched since then.

We reported on this item earlier, ("NASA to Chronicle Close Earth Flyby of Asteroid") but more can and probably should be said about the discoverer of this asteroid. In fact, there doesn't seem to be very much at all about this person other than his profession, nationality, and hobby.

We would like to hear from anyone who has any additional information about this apparently nameless amateur and the circumstances of its discovery.
